Saturday I had the pleasure of being one of five judges for the sixth annual Photo Of The Year, a photo competition for amateur photographers that benefits the MESD Outdoor School. We reviewed over 1100 submissions for six catagories: Top 100, Water, Adrenaline, Faces, Youth (under 18 photographers) and a special Nau Catalyst award, Nau being one of the sponsers for the event.
It was exciting to be part of the process and looking at all those photos. Not planning to, as I reviewed the submissions, I slowly became aware of my personal criteria as I went through the photos, searching for the ones that struck me. In no particular order, they were Focus, Center Of Interest, Emotion, Color Impact, Control/Mastery of Light and Composition/Use of Frame. Probably a great list to use when I make my own photographs! The wide range of subject matter and locations were thrilling and it was really difficult narrowing the submissions down to the Top 100 and 10 for each of the other catagories.
Now its your turn to vote! And while you’re at it, register online for the Photo of the Year Awards Gala on January 19 at the World Forestry Center. It’s fun, the talent is out there, and it’s for a great cause.
After six years of doing this, they throw a pretty good party. Attendance is limited this year and you save $10 by registering online so don’t procrastinate! All proceeds benefit the MESD Outdoor School Program.

Online voting will conclude Sunday, January 13th at Midnight. It’s a really fun evening of photography for a great cause. I hope to see you there!
