Cold One This Morning…

…and a cold one now as I post this Friday evening!

Photo Of The Year 2008…

I spent the better part of the day last Saturday in downtown Portland with four other photo judges, whittling down some 1,200 submissions to the top 100 for Portland’s Photo Of The Year 2008, benefitting the Oregon Outdoor School. Now in it’s sixth year and my second as a judge, Photo Of The Year was started by John [...]

Color Balance Nightmare…

Somehow with getting ready for the Hawaii trip this shot never got posted. Stuck at home with all the snow, I attached a heavy duty orange gel to one of my off-camera speedlights and did a color balance for that. Right out of the camera this rendered the background this oversaturated blue/magenta which looks very surreal ;-)

Christmas In Hawaii…

Many of you know I’ve just returned from a dream photo assignment, a location wedding in Waikiki, on Oahu, Hawaii. I will be posting some wedding favs in a future post but I wanted to share a few top images from our own endeavors. We were there the same time Barack Obama and family were [...]

Neighborhood Hooligans…

…up to no good in the front yard yesterday during the snow flurries. They stopped long enough for this quick shot, and I did not get ONE image with them all looking in the same direction!

Photo Class Ends…

We wrapped up my eight week “Manual Photography” class last evening with a little location lighting demo in the hallway foyer of the school. The lighting challenge we came up with was how to make a cool photo of a fictional “Teacher of the Year”. We started working with the ugly ambient fluorescent light that [...]

Check Your Straps…

My river-rat friends have a saying that “you can’t have too many straps”. But from time to time we should try to keep an eye on the condition of those straps. We use them for so many things, mostly for securing down things of value, and often take their integrity for granted. Here, I am [...]

Birthday Weekend…

You got to love it when your birthday falls on a weekend. My wife mentioned about a month ago to keep Thursday the 16th open after 5PM because she was taking me out for my birthday. Nothing special, she said, just a nice dinner out. It appears my really good friends from Arizona were visiting [...]

Spidertime in SW Portland…

Lots of spiders around our studio this time of year and I love getting outside and photographing them. I always remember a line from a John Shaw seminar, “the closer you look, the more there is to see”! Tech info: Canon 5D, 100mm f2.8 macro lens w/12mm Extension Tube, ISO 1000, 1/60 sec @ f5.6
