Jenna Fallon Make-up rocks…

I was reunited recently with a makeup artist I had worked with a year or so ago on a Nike shoot with distance runner, Kara Goucher. Jenna had called to reconnect and it was perfect timing because the scheduled makeup artist cancelled that day before my shoot for INUR magazine the next day. I quickly hooked her [...]

Family Portraits & Charity Auctions…

Families are starting to call and book the portrait sessions they won in the charity auctions I contributed to this year. Donating the sessions to groups I care about is a great way to give back to the community, increase awareness of my brand and create some exposure about another style of photography I do. As much networking [...]

Environmental Portraits…

Wow, interesting. The last three people who came to the studio for portraits, took one look at my wife’s creativity in the garden and all opted for outdoor portraits (what, you don’t want a boring seamless background?!). My wife is an excellent gardener (I just mow, that’s my creative input!) and I was proud of [...]

Photo Class wrap-up…

As we wrapped up another eight week photo class, we spent the last 45 minutes of the last class out in the hallway doing some remote flash stuff. I gave them all jobs, digital tech, Speedlite operator, gel manager, reflector holder, etc and just kind of directed them to think about light and what it [...]

Color Balance Nightmare…

Somehow with getting ready for the Hawaii trip this shot never got posted. Stuck at home with all the snow, I attached a heavy duty orange gel to one of my off-camera speedlights and did a color balance for that. Right out of the camera this rendered the background this oversaturated blue/magenta which looks very surreal ;-)

Neighborhood Hooligans…

…up to no good in the front yard yesterday during the snow flurries. They stopped long enough for this quick shot, and I did not get ONE image with them all looking in the same direction!

Equestrian Portraits…

Had a cool assignment to shoot portraits for an equestrian club last Sunday. Even though we were in a covered arena, it rained like crazy and the fiberglass roof made the rain loud! One Speedlite, camera right, gelled CTO, then color balanced for that, shot through a small white umbrella.

Children’s Author Portraits…

My friend and next door neighbor has realized a life long dream in getting one of her young teen novels published. Since one of the characters is a high school photographer, she asked me to look over the manuscript for any photo technical flaws or unrealistic shooting situations. It was a lot of fun getting [...]

Family Portrait…

We started off this family portrait discussing some props we could use and the ideas just grew from there!. Pretty soon we had a complete artist’s bedroom set on their deck, complete with objects d’art that are special to them. He’s a writer and she’ll be a midwife soon and we wanted the shots to say [...]

Family Portraits…

Readers of my blog may remember this client from her maternity shoot a few months back, and here’s the latest. This was always the plan, to come back in the studio for some quiet, detailed portraits in B+W after her son was born. It was a lot of fun getting to know the new family!
